"Braziliance" was the first Brazilian guitar piece that I learned while studing classical guitar with my first teacher in Chicago, Verne Fiedler. My father introduced me to the music of Laurindo Almeida and took me to his concert in 1968 at Chicago's Orchestra Hall. Laurindo performed solo guitar works of the classical, Brazilian, and the Samba Jazz repertoires. I was immediately inspired to become a lifelong fan and appreciate all that he accomplished. Laurindo loved this Braziliance composition and named his publishing company "Brazilliance Music Publishing" accordingly. Laurindo Almeida was born in 1917 into a musical family in Prainha, Brazil (near São Paulo.) He was a self taught guitarist. In 1936 he worked his way to Europe playing guitar in a cruise ship orchestra. In Paris, he attended a performance at the Hot Club de France by Stéphane Grappelli and famed guitarist Django Reinhardt, who became a lifelong artistic inspiration. Returning to Brazil, Almeida continued composing and performing. He became known for playing both Classical guitar, Spanish guitar and popular guitar music. When one of Laurindo's compositions, a song known as "Johnny Peddler" became a hit as recorded by the Andrews Sisters, he had the necessary finances to relocate to Los Angeles in 1947. In Hollywood, Almeida immediately went to work in film studio orchestras, and jazz clubs. He joined the Stan Kenton orchestra and was soon known as one of the originators of the "Samba Jazz" genre. Laurindo formed the LA Four jazz ensemble that obtained popularity in the 1950s. Samba Jazz was soon to grow into the bossa nova genre. Laurindo's career never ceased in reaching new levels of artistry. He earned five Grammys in his career, four of which were awarded in classical music categories. Laurindo was an easy going, warm and wonderful person who was also an AGS (American Guitar Society) member. AGS awarded him the AGS Lifetime Achievement Award in 1983. In 1993, Laurindo was feeling well enough during his bout with cancer to attend the AGS 70th Centenial Celebration. My wife Donna, suggested that I get my photo with Laurindo and being the beautiful soul that he was, he was so happy to oblige. Laurindo Almeida is one of my true guitar heros of all time.
