I made this video in 2006, to go along with the tours we would give at our Boise Smokejumper Base. We would show people our display mannequin, paracargo, sewing machines, rigging tables, chute tower, pictures on the wall, and if it was there, the airplane (Twin Otter!). Even the best tour guide, usually a rookie with first year enthusiasm, with lots arm waiving to paint the picture, still needed help conveying what happens off the base and in the field. So I made the video, without narration, for the tour guide to have some visuals to talk about while explaining the job. Production note: Oh, how I envy the compact GoPro type cameras of today. For the parachuting shots, initially I had a Hi8, then DV camcorder, bolted to my helmet, while wearing a neck-brace to hopefully stave off a spinal injury. I quickly adopted the bullet/lipstick cameras when they came along, but they were hard-wired. I would have a cable coming off the small camera on my helmet, snaked down under my jumpsuit, out through the waist into my gear bag, where the cable split, one to it's AA battery pack power source, the other to a camcorder set to record 'Video In.' Additionally, there was another wire for the lavalier mic sewn to the lapel of my jump jacket. The rare successful recording was an occasion for much rejoicing; IF, I remembered to correctly plug everything in and turn them on (while preparing to jump out of a "perfectly good airplane" (which, by the way, there is no such thing)), and none of the cables or batteries became disconnected by the parachute opening shock AND the landing roll. Music from "Koyaanisqatsi" Soundtrack by Philip Glass, and "A River Runs Through It" Soundtrack by Mark Isham.
