ORION 17 jewel ca1926 Pocket Watch Restoration. In memory of my father-in-low, an artist, sportsman and soldier with the pseudonym "ORION" in the Polish underground army (AK - Armia Krajowa) fighting against the Nazis in the Świętokrzyskie Province, Poland, during World War II I am not a professional watchmaker, watchmaking is just my hobby. #Orion, #OrionPocketWatch, #OrionVintagePocketWatch, #AntiquePocketWatch, #VintagePocketWatch, #PocketWatch, #watchmaking, #restoration, #renovation, #servicing, #watch, #watchmaker, #rebuilding, #antique, #vintage, #clock, #old, #timegrapher, #weishi, #hobby, #Bergeon, #Horotec, #WatchCleaningMachine, #ElmaWatchCleaningMachine, #Elma Orion was the primary brand used by the successors to Ferdinand Bachschmid's factory in Bienne in the first half of the 20th century. Bachschmid was the successor to P.-F. Ingold's wheel tooth cutting workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds and moved to Bienne in 1880. He manufactured Roskopf watches using the Condor brand. In 1897 his operation was taken over by Werner Brandt and Eduard Hofmann, who immediately registered the Orion brand. Orion Watch was organized as a public limited company in 1918 but struggled during the depression of the 1930s. It was taken over by Hans Kummer-Güggi of Ebauches Bettlach in 1939 and merged with his other Bienne watchmaker, Welta, in 1943. The Orion brand continued as part of Uhrenfabrik Welta & Orion AG through the 1960s. Ferdinand Bachschmid was born in 1848 in Kempten, Bavaria. He married Emilie Strub but the couple had no children. He came from Bavaria to La Chaux-de-Fonds to become a watchmaker and became friends with inventor P.-F. Ingold. On December 1, 1874, Ingold invited Bachschmid to become his partner in a business that exploited his specialized gear tooth cutting machine that had revolutionized the industry. When Ingold died in 1878, Bachschmid took over the firm. He moved this to Bienne on April 20, 1880 and expanded the operation to the manufacture of complete watches. By 1883 it was noted in the press that "Mr. F. Bachschmid, student and successor of P.-F. Ingold, makes a type of watch reminiscent of the Roskopf watch and which is very popular in Germany." These watches were very well-received at the international expositions in Brussels and Paris in that decade, making Bachschmid very wealthy. By 1893 he had registered the Condor brand. Ferdinand Bachschmid retired in 1895, leaving each of his workers a generous pension. He then turned to the construction of railways and other civic projects in the region. He died suddenly of a stroke on March 12, 1911 at the age of 63. His wife, Emilie née Strub, died in 1929, and the family, though childless, left a great deal to their home town. Brandt & Hofmann, Orion Watch Co Bachschmid retired in 1895, turning the business over to Werner Brandt from Le Locle and Eduard Hofmann from Oberwürschnitz in Saxony. Edgar-Werner Brandt-Steinhauser (1863-1949) was the son of Numa Brandt-Bourquin (1832-1911), one of the Brandt brothers of Bienne that practiced traditional watchmaking, unlike other Brandt brothers there who created the massive Omega factory. Brandt's cousin Berthold (1868-1930) would take over the business of his father and uncles. Eduard-Bruno Hofmann came from the village of Oberwürschnitz in Mühlental, southwest Saxony. Their firm, known as Brandt & Hofmann succ. de F. Bachschmid, officially began on February 1, 1896. That same year the partners registered the Orion brand, which would become the name of the company in 1903. It was located at Schützengasse 37 in Bienne. The partners quickly registered the "B&H" brand name (as well as Alcala and Advèrul) but these do not appear to have been widely used. Instead, the firm focused on the Orion name. Brandt & Hofmann also renewed the Condor name. Another trademark registered in 1901 featured the name of "F. Bachschmid", unusual for the time as this was the name of a living person. But this was a true brand, with a logo featuring an anchor. 70 years later this brand, now property of Welta, would be acquired by Ulysse Nardin and remains associated with that famous company today. After years of work, the Saxon Eduard-Bruno Hofmann was naturalized as a resident of Renan in Canton Berne. Hofmann would spend the rest of his life calling the small watchmaking village in the Vallon de Saint-Imier his home despite living and working in Bienne. On December 26, 1918, a public limited company called Uhrenfabrik Orion AG (Fabrique de Montres Orion SA) (Orion Watch Co. Ltd.) was established in Bienne to expand Bachschmid's operation.
