Hyperplastic polyps are benign colorectal polyps that are usually small and have distinct histopathological characteristics: 1. Surface epithelium: The surface of hyperplastic polyps is lined with normal-looking columnar epithelial cells. 2. Glands: The glands within hyperplastic polyps can be elongated and closely packed, often forming a serrated or saw-toothed appearance. 3. Lack of dysplasia: Unlike adenomatous polyps, hyperplastic polyps typically do not show significant dysplastic changes, and their cells do not show the same degree of enlargement or hyperchromasia (dark staining of nuclei). 4. Inflammatory cells: There can be a mild infiltration of inflammatory cells within the lamina propria (connective tissue layer beneath the epithelium) of the polyp. Hyperplastic polyps are generally considered to be low-risk for developing into cancer. However, some polyps with a more serrated architecture, known as serrated polyps, may have a slightly increased risk of malignant transformation. It's important to discuss the findings with a medical professional and follow their recommendations for monitoring and further management.
