The sterile, single-use pupil expansion device (I-Ring Pupil Expander, Beaver-Visitec) consists of a nest that holds the inserter and expansion device. The pupil expansion device is made of a soft polyurethane material that is gentle on intraocular tissue. After injecting viscoelastic into the anterior chamber, the inserter is introduced through the primary incision. It is positioned centrally over the lens and pupil expansion device is introduced. A Sinskey hook is used to engage the four channels of the pupil expansion device. The positioning holes are isolated from the channel, preventing contact with the iris. The device completely engages with the iris, helping retain the iris' natural shape while promoting a consistent 6.3-mm pupil size. Its uniform aperture shape helps guide the capsulorhexis. To remove the device, disengage the four channels with the Sinskey hook. Align the proximal hinge with the primary incision. Re-introduce the inserter and draw the device into the cannula.
