This video is about the surprising historical practice of putting animals on trial in medieval Europe. People really did hold formal court cases for pigs, rats, and other creatures, complete with lawyers and judges. This wasn't because they thought animals were exactly like people, but because of their strong religious beliefs and understanding of justice at the time. They believed animals were part of God’s creation and could be influenced by good or evil, and that punishing them restored order when they caused harm. These trials were serious legal events, documented in court records, and were a way for people to deal with a world they often didn’t understand and to feel like they were controlling forces beyond their power.
