Honorary Graduate | Prof. Mahendra Gulabbhai Patel OBE – Doctor of Health | Summer Ceremonies 2023

In recognition of their significant impact as a world class researcher in the field of Pharmacy, commitment to promotion of Equality Diversity and Inclusion and as an alumnus of the University of Bradford.’ Professor Mahendra Gulabbhai Patel is a multi-award-winning pharmacist with professorial roles at UK universities and overseas. He is a Patron of the Commonwealth Pharmacy Association and a Teaching and Faculty Member of UNESCO listed in the HSJ 50 most Influential BAME people in Health in 2022. Mahendra gained his PhD at the University of Bradford exploring prescribing variations and health inequalities. His subsequent work with the British Heart Foundation led to developing a national educational toolkit promoting healthy hearts, which won the BMA Patient Information Award. Mahendra’s pioneering work with NICE creating Student Champions became a national programme in forty universities. He is one of the first to gain a fellowship at NICE. Mahendra is a founding member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and formerly its treasurer, where he was awarded a fellowship and later its prestigious President’s Charter Award for outstanding services to pharmacy. He is also a founding member and trustee of the Mouth Cancer Foundation supporting early detection of mouth cancer. Mahendra, a veteran of the South Health Asian Foundation, helped develop a suite of resources for diabetes and cardiovascular disease supporting South Asian communities and was central to the team which won the BMJ Team Diabetes Awards. Mahendra is a national lead at the University of Oxford supporting recruitment to clinical trials to be inclusive and representative and has now established the Centre for Research Equity at Oxford in the first of its kind. Internationally, Mahendra has worked extensively in promoting pharmacy education and antibiotic guardianship. In India, he became the first International Fellow of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association, and in Lebanon he was made International Honorary Ambassador by Order of Lebanese Pharmacists. Mahendra is highly active in promoting inclusion and diversity within the NHS and received the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Outstanding Service Award.
