You should always check which exam your schools prefer, if necessary, by phoning them up. Things change every few years. The GMAT is still just for Business School, while the GRE can be used for many Graduate programmes. Simple, right? But the GRE is now increasingly accepted for MBAs too. It is still true that the GMAT is more commonly accepted for Business School. The GRE has now become a popular choice among a minor section of business school applicants, and the trend is growing by the year. Although close to 1200 universities across the world accept the GRE, the GMAT still remains the most valued exam by business schools. According to the GMAC, around 5900 business programs across over 2100 universities and institutions around the world, accept the GMAT. What about the top schools: I will review the comments made by: Stanford Business School, Harvard Business School, LBS and Instead. 2. Schools publish more about their GMAT scores. If you are looking for an exam to boost your otherwise average application, think GMAT. If you have a great application and just don’t want the test to bring you down too much, think GRE. 3. Scholarships: Likely to be easier currently with 700+ GMAT score. https://start.gmat.com/scholarships-w... 4. Verbal. Obvious piece of advice is that you can take a free practice test of each and see how you feel! They are similar when it comes to reading comprehension, the difference is on the remaining sections. GRE is vocabulary-intense, GMAT more grammar-intense. • Do you know or enjoy learning lots of fancy words (think GRE), or do you prefer practicing grammar rules (think GMAT)? • Do you love finding the flaw/the assumption in complex arguments – Critical reasoning 5. Quant: For Quant, GRE is just a bit easier. But not as different as some people say curriculum-wise. • Fewer ‘tricks’ or deliberately trying to catch you out in the GRE. • Data Sufficiency vs Quantitative Comparison & Data Interpretation: Data Sufficiency is more difficult for beginners. • No calculator in GMAT, calculator in GMAT • GRE less adaptive – so a bit less hard at the higher level. A greater percentage of students get perfect scores in their main area of interest – so GMAT can allow you to stand out more in that 720 – 760 level. Much above that and even the top schools don’t care too much. • Quant virtually the same – except normal distribution and a couple other niche topics. 6. Other sections. Essays Require More Prep for GRE: Two essays for GRE, just one for the GMAT. IR and AWA are grey area for the GMAT currently. There is also an Experimental section in the GRE and the sections are jumbled up – quant, verbal, quant, verbal … not all in one go. 7. Practical differences. Skip questions and come back in GRE but not GMAT – though not particularly recommended. Cost for the exam: Small difference but just FYI Both tests you can take 5 times in a year but 16 days between retakes for GMAT, 21 days for GRE. 8. Employment. Some consulting and finance companies apparently find a top GMAT score a positive for an applicant: “People often say you need a 700-plus GMAT score to get a job at a big three management consulting firm. McKinsey does not have the GMAT as a requirement but says applicants will be 'better-served' by providing standardized test scores than leaving them off an application.” https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2... A 2019 Poets and Quants article written by a Stratus Admissions Consultant goes further: https://poetsandquants.com/2019/03/07... Summary and Personal Take: In Terms of stretching, GMAT is a bit more ‘impressive’ for business schools particularly, but for everyone else, GRE is slightly ‘easier’, especially on Quant. But only slightly. Students switching from one to the other rarely see a massive score boost – and you can check as there are score converters out there. Engaging or even visiting the school you wish to go to is probably the best bet, as is liaising with current and former students, not to mention the fact that having been there in person looks good on an application! The GRE and GMAT are two of most used graduate exams for those seeking to study a Masters Degree or Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree.
