Lewis, Mere Christianity) C.S. Lewis identifies two strange facts about humanity: a universal sense of "decent behavior" (the 'ought') and the universal failure to fully adhere to it (the 'is not'). Lewis contrasts this Moral Law with physical laws, which are merely descriptions of what objects like stones or trees do (the 'is'). Unlike physical laws, the Law of Human Nature tells humans what they ought to do, highlighting a reality "above and beyond the actual facts" of their behavior. He argues the Moral Law is not simply personal convenience, noting we blame someone who cheats (e.g., for a train seat) even if they cause the same inconvenience as someone who acted fairly. Furthermore, moral judgment relies more on intent than outcome, as shown by the difference between an accidental trip and a deliberate attempt to trip. Lewis dismisses the explanation that morality is solely for collective social benefit, arguing this leads to circular reasoning ("you ought to be unselfish because you ought to be unselfish"). Decent behavior often involves actions that actively go against immediate personal profit or self-interest. Because the Moral Law is not just a fact, a fancy, or a matter of convenience, Lewis concludes that this rule of right and wrong must somehow be a real thing that objectively exists. This means the Law of Decent Behavior is not made up by humans but is found "pressing on us". Therefore, Lewis asserts, we must admit there is more than one kind of reality: the reality of descriptive facts and the reality of a genuine, prescriptive Moral Law.
