During my recent Thanksgiving trip to Boston, I was able to spend some time visiting my former stomping grounds at Old South Church and record some repertoire there. This was recorded on 11/26/25. "Flourish for a Bidding" is one of Herbert Howells' later organ works, written in 1968 and published as part of a set entitled "Three Pieces for Organ," along with "Intrata No. 2" and "St. Louis Comes to Clifton." The tile is perhaps a bit misleading at first glance. One might assume that "bidding" refers to a bidding, or invitational prayer in Anglican church liturgies, but it was in fact written for an auction to raise funds for the Royal College of Organists, which Howells had previously served as President. The work was premiered by George Thalben-Ball on a Hill, Norman, and Beard organ whose design had been influenced by the Organ Reform Movement of the mid-20th century. This might seem an odd choice, but it would fit the compositional techniques Howells employed. It is short compared to Howells' other organ compositions and is in five sections. The first, third, and fifth are loud and declamatory, in a style one would very much expect from Howells. The second and fourth, however, are rather sparse and contrapuntal. While counterpoint had never been entirely absent from Howells' writing, here he seemed to be moving in a new direction that foreshadowed his "Partita" a few years later. #OrganMusic #OldSouthChurch #HerbertHowells
