I Asked the Lord

Lyrics by John Newton and music by Herbert Stanley Oakeley. Video by Pam's piano. My sister sent me the book "Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners" by Dane Ortlund. In chapter 2 entitled "Despair", Dane quoted all seven verses of this hymn as evidence that in order to grow in Christ we need to give up on ourselves. Salvation is of God only; there is nothing that we contribute to our saving and God in His mercy helps us to see that. It's a powerful thought. Yes, this John Newton is the same former slave ship owner who also wrote the life-changing hymn "Amazing Grace".
