But as fires spread across the ruined city, the hotel's 28,000-gallon rooftop reservoir and private water system couldn't stop the flames, and guests and staff watched from the street as the $5 million palace that had hosted presidents and kings burned for three days straight. This is the story of how the hotel that survived the earthquake couldn't survive the fire, and how its architect committed suicide when he saw his greatest work destroyed.
