I gotta say this is one for the record books… One of the greatest collections of songs we’ve ever had on this show. Coming up I’m counting down the top 10 songs of 1969, a year so full of classics I could’ve done 5 different top 10s… Including a song that has become such a cultural singalong that we the fans have created our own lyrics to the chorus! Then another one that was the #1 song of the year Sugar Sugar, but decades later nobody knows who really sang it because it was an imaginary band! Then there’s the classic record by The Zombies where the main word in the title was misspelled and nobody caught it… so millions of sales and decades later it still hasn’t been fixed and then there is Creedence Clearwater Revival that had half a dozen songs hit #2, but never got to #1. You’ll be shocked… Next, we have many legends here with us to tell us the stories behind the greatest songs ever! on Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers 22Unchained, Thomas Halterman, Keith Novak, Yvonne Fus, Jeffrey Thorn ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! To give you the top 10 songs of the year Richard Nixon was sworn in as President of the United States, the Vietnam war was raging, Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, and the first message was delivered on a mysterious, futuristic medium called the ‘internet.’ It was 1969 and the music of the time was immaculate. This is one of the best years in music so chock full of classics, half the countdown could’ve been filled with hits by CCR and the other half could’ve been the Beatles… Let’s do it. Our countdown of the Top 10 Songs of 1969 begins with one of the sweetest pieces of ear candy ever put to vinyl….At #10, it’s ”Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies. As one of the most successful bubblegum pop songs of the 60s, “Sugar Sugar” was released to take advantage of the immensely popular comic book series and animated TV show, The Archies. It was written by Jeff Barry, who co-wrote countless other hits, including “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Be My Baby,” and Andy Kim, who was also a performer. Remember “Rock Me Gently” the #1 smash that would peak in 1974. The lead vocal was performed by the multi-talented Ron Dante, who had great success as a studio musician, writer, and producer. In fact, he had two songs in the top 10 the same week, when Sugar Sugar was at #1 and nobody knew his name! I actually sat down with Ron in Hollywood to get the story behind the irresistible “Sugar Sugar:” Here’s what he said. “Sugar Sugar” by the fictional band The Archies, featuring the very real lead vocal by Ron Dante rocketed to #1 in 17 countries around the globe, including Mexico, Canada, and the UK. Moving along with our countdown it’s the soulful, jazzy rock of a band with a song that was a crossover hit on 3 major charts. I’m talking about Spinning Wheel. So check this out. Blood Sweat and Tears suddenly became one of the biggest in the world as the only group to have 3 straight #2 hits…their album hit #1 beat the Beatles' Abby Road for album of the year and then at their peak they were banned from touring in America.
