What is the Kyrie. The Kyrie comes from the phrase “Kyrie Eleison”, meaning “Lord, have mercy”. You might think it is Latin, but in fact it is Greek – one of the last remaining vestiges of Greek in the Christian worship services from the time before the conversion of Rome and the institution of Latin Mass. In the context of worship, the Kyrie is a prayer of praise and request for mercy of God and takes place immediately after confession in forgiveness. This version is used at GSLC’s Contemporary Worship service. If you were to worship at one of our Traditional services, the Kyrie would have different wording, be sung by a pastor, choir member, or worship director and would accompany the organ. You may have seen it sung differently or even spoken at other churches or services. The next time you sing (or hear) the Kyrie in church, remember that you are taking part in a tradition that goes back to the earliest days of Christianity and likely praying in a similar way as some of Christ's earliest disciples! ------------- Copyright Information: Description Text: Adapted from "The Kyrie" written by Dr Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at GSLC, in the December 2021 edition of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's monthly newsletter, "The Shepherd's Horn" (https://goodshepherd.com/The-Shepherd.... “Kyrie Eleison.” Copyright © 2022 Augsburg Fortress.
