(9 Jun 2020) The head of the New York City police union is calling the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis a "murder." Patrick Lynch, surrounded by members of police forces all across the state of New York, told reporters: "Eight minutes is wrong. There was no struggle. There was no reason. So I know I speak on behalf of every police officer here. It was wrong. We denounce it and we have from the beginning," said Lynch. Lynch used most of his press confrence to criticize the New York State Legislature. The legislature is looking to overhaul a decades-old law that keeps law enforcement officers' disciplinary records secret in New York. The state law, known by its section title, 50-a, was passed in the 1970s to prevent criminal defense attorneys from subjecting officers to cross-examinations about irrelevant information in their personnel file. The law applies to jail guards and firefighters, as well. But over the years, the law also draped a veil over most records of alleged police misconduct. Formal complaints about excessive force by officers are not public in New York. In recent years, police departments have cited the law in refusing to say even whether officers have been punished. "They're legislating by signs in a protest," said Lynch. Lynch also commented on A New York City police officer caught on video violently shoving a woman to the ground during a Brooklyn protest over George Floyd's death. Officer Vincent D'Andraia, 28, is being charged with assault. Lynch said there was rush to judgement in the case. "Let the facts go where they go. But what do we see here in this city? We see a video. We, always the same words go back on your tape. I don't like what I saw. I think he should lose his gun and shields. But then we're gonna have an investigation. They got it backwards. Get the allegation. Investigate the allegation. Then decide guilt or innocence. Not before," said Lynch.
