Jesus Calms the (our) Storm - Mark 4: 35-42 A Wk 3 Saturday Should I continue including the Gospel passage of not? 0:00 Begin 1:00 Reflection 3:20 Hymn A reading from the Gospel of St Mark 5: 35-41. Evening falls, and Jesus says, “Let us go across to the other side.” The invitation sounds simple enough, almost casual. Yet it carries the disciples straight into deep water and rising fear. What begins as obedience ends in terror. The wind howls, waves crash, and the boat fills faster than their courage can manage. And Jesus? He sleeps. This detail unsettles us. The storm is real. The danger is immediate. Their fear is justified. Yet Jesus rests, not because He is indifferent, but because He trusts completely. His sleep is not absence; it is assurance. When the disciples wake Him, their cry is raw and honest: “Teacher, do you not care?” It is a prayer many of us know well. We ask it when illness lingers, when anxiety overwhelms, when faith feels small against the noise of life. Their fear is not condemned; it is revealed. Jesus rises and speaks — not to the disciples first, but to the storm. “Quiet! Be still!” Creation listens. Chaos obeys. The wind drops, the sea settles, and suddenly the silence is louder than the storm ever was. Only then does Jesus turn to them: “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” He is not scolding weakness; He is inviting growth. Faith, here, is not the absence of fear, but trust in His presence — even when He seems asleep. The final question lingers: “Who then is this?” The miracle does not end curiosity; it deepens it. The disciples are left in awe, standing between fear and faith, discovering that the One in their boat is Lord of both storm and silence. This Gospel reminds us: Jesus does not always calm the storm immediately, but He is always present within it. And that presence is enough to carry us safely to the other side. Let us pray. Lord Jesus, When storms rise within and around us, and fear speaks louder than faith, teach us to trust Your nearness. In moments when You seem silent or distant, help us to remember that You are still with us. Speak Your peace into our restless hearts, steady our trembling steps, and draw us from fear into faith. May we learn, even in the dark, to rest in Your care and follow where You lead. Amen. Hymn: Be Still O Heart Verse 1 The day grows dim, the journey calls, We set our course at Your command; The waters stir, the shadows fall, Yet still we trust Your guiding hand. Chorus O speak Your peace, O calm our fear, Be still, O heart, the Lord is near; Though storms may rise and night be long, His word is sure, His love is strong. No wind or storm too great for Him Faith and trust to have to the brim. Verse 2 The wind grows fierce, the waves draw near, Our courage thins, our voices cry; You seem asleep while fear is here, As hope and strength begin to sigh. Chorus O speak Your peace, O calm our fear, Be still, O heart, the Lord is near; Though storms may rise and night be long, His word is sure, His love is strong. No wind or storm too great for Him Faith and trust to have to the brim. Verse 3 You rise and speak, the chaos fades, The sea grows quiet at Your will; We stand in awe, our hearts amazed, For wind and wave obey You still. Chorus O speak Your peace, O calm our fear, Be still, O heart, the Lord is near; Though storms may rise and night be long, His word is sure, His love is strong. No wind or storm too great for Him Faith and trust to have to the brim. Verse 4 So when our lives are tossed and torn, And faith feels small, and trust feels thin, We cling to You, our hope reborn, For You are God, and You are in. Chorus O speak Your peace, O calm our fear, Be still, O heart, the Lord is near; Though storms may rise and night be long, His word is sure, His love is strong. No wind or storm too great for Him Faith and trust to have to the brim.
