December 1986 ~ ~ I learned this piece while a student at Morehouse. The director was Wendell Whalum, a profound and intensely gifted man. He expected, indeed, demanded that students meet very high standards in music, performance and everyday tasks. Dr. Whalum was also my work/study supervisor. The personnel for this performance (to the best of my recall) was: Tracey Coley, soloist ~ bongos, Mario Majette & George Pettegrew ~ congos, Micheal Johnson, Wesley Days, Kevin Whalum ~ mother drum, Mark Kellar ~ cowbell, Charles Willis ~ maracas, Marlon Cousins ~ shakara, Leonard Brice ~ tamborines, Gary Maddox, Illya Davis and Stuart Flemister ~ chanters, Troy Undrewood, Todd Daniels and Larry Norton.
