There's a ton of new anime OPs that I really like, but I honestly wasn't feeling much motivation to arrange any of them. Then, I read a tweet that famous YOASOBI singer Lilas 'ikura' would be singing a League of Legends Cinematic theme song, with instrumentals composed be Kevin Penkin, who is also known for his anime soundtracks. And honestly, it was such a breath of fresh air to try and arrange something a bit more orchestral, instead of the back to back to back jpop/rock songs I've been doing recently. This cover also helps one of my other mental dilemmas - because I've always wondered whether my Arcane Piano Medley, which remains one of my most popular videos, was secretly a curse. After all, while I loved Arcane, I have a ...let's say...unpleasant relationship with League of Legends itself and don't see myself playing the game ever again. But alas, after attracting such a large audience which no doubt includes LoL players, what song would I possibly cover to cater to them? And thus came this perfect intersection of one of my favourite Japanese singers, a masterful anime OST composer, and this League of Legends cinematic. I don't have much to write about the arrangement itself, again taking on an orchestral piece provided some new challenges. Again I try and preserve inner layers and other 'ear candy' where possible, which is quite difficult since I only have two hands and not an entire orchestra... Nontheless, this idea is most prevalent in the second verse, where I play the flute counter melodies on top of the actual vocal melody. The choruses themselves necessitate thick octave chords in the right hand as there are many many layers of vocal harmony which really helps create a rich sound. Finally, the accompaniment frequently emulates the drum's syncopated rhythm, which is also why I play those hits with a more percussive articulation. The rest of the accompaniment sits more in the background to create the atmosphere driven by the strings and other instruments. I hope you enjoyed this slightly different cover than normal!
