My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Idlib Arabic dialect. The Idlib dialect is spoken by roughly 1.5 to 2 million people in Syria and abroad. It is unique, as it serves as a transitional variety between the Aleppine, Coastal, and central dialects. Despite its transitional nature, the Idlib dialect is distinct and exhibits many traits that are uncommon in other dialects. It is simultaneously close yet distant from the dialects spoken along the coast in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus. The people of Idlib are known for their rich historical heritage. The ancient city of Ebla in Idlib gave rise to one of the oldest kingdoms in history and is often described as the first world power. Ebla maintained its prosperity through a vast trading network. Artifacts from Sumer, Cyprus, Egypt, and as far as Afghanistan were recovered from the city’s palaces. Many Romans and Greeks also settled the region of Idlib during antiquity. It later prospered under the rule of Arab overlords in the Middle Ages. Idlib has a diverse demographic, with a majority of Sunni Muslims, a large Christian minority, and small Shia and Alawite minorities.
