South Korea and Poland to cooperate on nuclear power project

Construction is expected to begin in the middle of this decade. Lee Eun-jin reports. The southwestern city of Patnow, roughly 240 kilometers from Poland's capital Warsaw,... is a power station where Poland's highest boiler house stands at 135 meters. Poland has been planning the construction of a nuclear power plant for decades... in an effort to phase out aging coal-burning plants in a country that suffers from some of the worst air pollution in Europe. On Monday, the South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Polish Minister of State Assets signed outline agreements, with a "100 percent" guarantee to be partners for the European nation's second planned nuclear power plant project. The joint statement said that the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power company... and Polish private energy firms ZE PAK and PGE will assess the viability of building four 1-thousand-400 megawatt nuclear reactors in Patnow in central Poland. "On the question of a partnership guarantee... I'll give a short answer. 100 percent. The duration depends on the companies' operations management." Poland's nuclear goals became more urgent as they began facing serious coal shortages partly caused by sanctions on Russian coal imports. Considering the diplomatic and security situation, Poland chose the U.S. Firm Westinghouse Electric to build their first nuclear power plant... a deal which was announced on October 28. But for the second nuclear power plant project, Poland has decided to join hands with K-H-N-P because of its safe and cost-effective construction technology. "We expect construction to start around 2026... or maybe as early as 2025." Ministries from both countries said a preliminary development plan should be ready by the end of this year. The Patnow project is led by private companies, with government backing... which means the planning could be quicker with less red tape, however, the paperwork alone could still take at least four to five years. The nuclear power plant will be built on the current site of the Patnow power plant,... which is set to shut down in 2024.
