Orlando Wetlands Park is a 1,650-acre nature preserve located in Christmas, Florida, about 20 miles east of downtown Orlando. Florida's man-made wetlands are a natural water treatment plant. The park was created in the 1980s as a joint project between the City of Orlando and Orange County Utilities to treat reclaimed water and provide habitat for wildlife. The park features a variety of wetland habitats, including marshes, swamps, and ponds, which provide important habitat for more than 200 species of birds and a diverse array of other wildlife. You can explore the park on foot, bike, or horseback via a network of trails that wind through the wetlands. In addition to its recreational and wildlife conservation value, the Orlando Wetlands Park also serves an important function in the community by helping to purify reclaimed water before it is released back into the environment. The park's wetland cells act as natural filters, removing pollutants and excess nutrients from the water, which helps to protect the health of local rivers and lakes.
