When Otis Redding died in a plane crash in late 1967, he had just recently recorded a slew of songs that fall that were intended to set his new musical direction. When the Stax/Atlantic distribution deal ended in early 1968, Redding's unreleased material became part of the deal that Stax had to turn over to Atlantic. Among the songs that were in the treasure trove of unreleased material was, Hard To Handle, written by Allen Jones, Alvertis Isbell, and Redding. Atlantic began releasing Redding material on their Atco subsidiary label in 1968 and Hard To Handle was released as a B-side to Redding's cover version of the Impression's hit, Amen.
