In this video we visit Warrnambool, a small seaside city situated on Victoria's south west coast around 225km from Melbourne. With a population of around 35,000, Warrnambool is a popular seaside holiday destination with a rich maritime history; home to natural attractions such as beaches, waterways, and is situated on the western end of the famous Great Ocean Road. Warrnambool is the terminus of V/Line's Warrnambool Line, the railway having reached here in February 1890. In this video we see various trains around town recorded over a 3-day period in October 2023. We primarily see V/Line N Class locomotive-hauled trains with N Set carriages at numerous locations. However we also conduct a short chase with the Warrnambool Freighter operated by Pacific National, on this occasion being hauled by G543. On this particular weekend Steamrail Victoria also paid a visit to Warrnambool with their Warrnambool Westcoaster tour with steam locomotive R711 & diesel locomotive S313. We see the steam train arrive and depart Warrnambool, plus a couple of clips shunting around the station & a spin on the turntable. The main purpose of this video was to get clips of V/Line N Classes around town. The Warrnambool Line was one of the last locations on the V/Line network that was exclusively served by N Class locomotive-hauled trains; a place where the Vlocity DMU dare not roam. However with level crossing & signalling works on the Warrnambool Line now complete in association with the Warrnambool Line upgrade project, Vlocities have now started running on the Warrnambool Line. This started on the 1st November 2024 where trains 8863 & 8866 (being the 10:13am Warrnambool service & the return 3:13pm Southern Cross service) on weekdays are now operated with Vlocities. A new timetable coming into effect on the 1st December 2024 will see all Warrnambool Line services operated with Vlocities, with the exception being the evening trains from Melbourne to Warrnambool, and the morning trains from Warrnambool to Melbourne that need to stable in Warrnambool overnight. These services will still be operated with N Classes, for now... Regardless we're definitely now in the final months of N Class operation on the Warrnambool Line and is another nail in the coffin for V/Line locomotive-hauled passenger trains in Victoria. When the rollout of Vlocities to Warrnambool is completed, it will leave the Swan Hill Line as the only remaining line with N Class locomotive-hauled trains.
