Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" is famous for the riot at its 1913 premiere, but the real story is how its rhythmic complexity terrified even the most seasoned musicians for decades. Forget the audience riot—the orchestra itself was on the verge of a meltdown. Join me for a deep dive into the rhythmic minefield of Le Sacre du printemps, told from my personal perspective as an 18-year-old student musician who survived playing it. I'll share the story of how a local orchestra, the El Paso Symphony, tackled this behemoth under the baton of a new conductor with an international resume, Gürer Aykal, and went from a disastrous first rehearsal to triumphant performances. We'll look at Leonard Bernstein's own hand-annotated score, discuss the "cheat sheet" created by Nicholas Slonimsky that conductors still bless, and listen to the very first recording from 1929 to understand just how ahead of its time this music was. Plus, stick around for an interactive challenge where you can test your own rhythmic skills against the notorious "Sacrificial Dance." Can you keep the beat? This is the second video in my series exploring the decade that exploded the classical music rulebook (1905-1914). What's your favorite recording of The Rite? When did you first hear it, and how did you react? Have you ever played it? Let me know in the comments below! Don't forget to like and subscribe for the next video in the series, where we'll explore Alban Berg's revolutionary Piano Sonata, Op. 1. The reference recording of The Rite of Spring used in this video is from the 2000 Proms recording by Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fransicso Symphony in London: • Michael Tilson Thomas conducts "The Rite o...
