The Driving Creek Railway is a unique 15inch gauge line up on the Coromandel Peninsula. It was built by the late Barry Brickell as a means of getting terracotta clay from the hills down to the pottery studio, and it didn't officially open to the public until 1990. The line runs through a replanted native bush, and has to tackle steep grades, sharp curves, a double-decker viaduct and five head-shunts in order to reach the top station. These days, the DCR are still offering rides up to the Eyefull Tower in one of their custom-built diesel railcars (their names are Snake, Possum and Linx). I went to the railway in January 2024, and got to ride on Snake; my favourite member of the DCR's fleet.
