Not everyone knows the nuances of these two beautiful—but very different—philosophies. Honestly, I had no idea what a Montessori classroom even was until I had my son. Now it’s something that has profoundly changed my life. That said, one of my biggest pet peeves (and I know many Montessori and Waldorf educators feel this) is how often these two approaches get lumped together. Usually because, let’s be honest, they both use natural materials and create dreamy, beautiful spaces for children. But aesthetically similar ≠ philosophically the same. I deeply respect both approaches. I even borrow from Waldorf’s sense of whimsy and creativity when designing Montessori works. The thing I love most about Montessori? You can do almost anything—it’s all in the presentation.
