Metropolitan Klezmer live "Mameniu" [Mother] concert recording, commemorating in Yiddish song the Triangle Fire centenary onstage at The Great Hall of Cooper Union: March 25, 2011. This 1911 disaster balladry responded to the tragic inferno at the shirtwaist factory with a new stanza added to an existing Yiddish song by frequent theater collaborators Rumshinsky [music] and Shorr [lyrics]. Sheet music describes this Elegy to the 146 victims of the inferno (old-style transliteration and Yiddish text onscreen here matching live audio, with English translation text in this video end-credits). The cover art's phrasing is strikingly similar another -- perhaps rival -- song written & published within weeks of the 1911 tragedy, "Di Fire Korbunes" [The Fire's Sacrifices], a completely new lyric by Louis Gilrod which was set to an existing melody composed a few years before for an earlier song of his. And while the publisher of "Fire Korbunes" added cover art with the misleading image of fire ladders reaching to the inferno's tenth floor windows, "Mameniu" creates an entirely apocryphal mother character similar to one in the competing song. Though the melodramatic portrait is fictional, these songs' broader subject was almost too overwhelmingly real to be depicted: One hundred and forty six souls perished within minutes, mostly young Jewish & Italian immigrant women and girls. Words by Anshel Schorr / Music by Joseph Rumshinsky, a composer-lyricist team also on various Yiddish song projects (Schorr was a noted dramatist as well, in fact both a playwright and theater manager; Rumshinsky also conducted many major Yiddish musical theater productions).
