In 1977/78, I wasn't impressed by Elvis' first LP "My Aim is True". I frequently did this with various new music artists. Second albums frequently became the new discovery, and then back I'd go to the original album. Costello and his sharp band "The Attractions" became an obsession. I've almost lost friends because of E.C.. I have seen him more than 20 times and met him twice. I've calmed my obsession, but...you know how it is. Practically each album was re-bought also on tapes and CDs, 20+ live shows.... I mean, he could at least invite me for a sandwich when he plays Toronto next time. Those British boys just seemed to have more vast vocabularies. As well as the music, I was always very interested in the lyrics. The Beatles, especially, introduced me to smart, clever wordplay. Joe Strummer and Elvis presented vast amounts of very smart lyrics. In "Pump It Up", Costello unleashes personal thoughts about his observance of a new female interest he cannot escape, coupled with unending ferocity in a single, memorable riff, the one that just never goes away for the entire piece. It practically begs for drums to join in the fun. Riding a floor tom instead of a hi-hat? Oh, count me in.
