In an upcoming Oncology Decoded Podcast, Benjamin Garmezy, MD, associate director of genitourinary research and executive cochair of the Genitourinary Cancer Research Executive Committee at Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI) and a medical oncologist at SCRI Oncology Partners specializing in genitourinary cancers, spoke with different experts at the 2025 World Conference on Genitourinary Cancers (World GU) in Nashville, TN. Garmezy spoke with Mehmet Asim Bilen, MD, a professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Genitourinary Medical Oncology Program at Winship Cancer Institute, about the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to managing GU cancer. Bilen, who served as a chair for a session on this topic, highlighted that not all real-world situations are covered by standard guidelines. Therefore, a multidisciplinary discussion is crucial for developing the best treatment plans for difficult cases. Furthermore, Garmezy added that while academic centers may have all specialties under one roof, care can be fractured in community settings, making communication between specialists essential. He praised the meeting for bringing together interdisciplinary specialists to collaborate, communicate, and learn from each other. This collaboration may allow clinicians to take what they learn back to their own practices.
