In this session, Pierre Fastrez and Normand Landry examined the field of media literacy and media education research from the perspective of its research methods. They argue that methodological discussions are an exciting way to interrogate the foundations of this field of research, and open up a dialogue on fundamental questions about what is meant by “media education”. Such methodological discussions also challenge us to reflect on the nature of “media literacy” as a set of learning outcomes that should result from educational initiatives as the socio- technical contexts and associated educational needs rapidly evolve. The session will introduce the variety of research methods featured in the book, grouped according to whether they focus on media practices, educational initiatives or prescriptive discourse.
