Presented By: Maura Pieretti, PhD, HCLD(ABB) Speaker Biography: Dr. Maura Pieretti received MS and PhD degrees from the University of Perugia, Italy in Biological Sciences and Perinatology/ Genetics, in 1984 and 1990, respectively. During her graduate studies, she was an intern and an exchange research student at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and at King’s College, London, England. Dr. Pieretti did her Post-Doctoral fellowship in Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, working on the Human Genome Project; and at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY with work in cancer genetics. She was a Dept of Pathology Assistant Professor and Consultant of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY from 1996 to 2000. She was a Dept. of Pathology Assistant Professor and Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of South Alabama from 2000 to 2003. In 2004 Dr. Pieretti established the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory for the BayCare Health System, in Tampa, FL. Over the years, the central lab added several centralized services including Cytogenetics, Molecular Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry, Special Chemistry and recently a central Microbiology laboratory. The centralized laboratory (BayCare Labs, LLC) is located in an 18,000 square feet renovated structure and serves all 12 hospitals within the BayCare Health System and the large BayCare Labs Outreach program around the Tampa Bay region. Dr. Pieretti is the Scientific Director for BayCare Laboratories and in addition to overseeing the centralized testing, she oversees clinical laboratory testing at all BayCare hospital sites. Dr. Pieretti is a reviewer for several scientific journals and serves as a College of American Pathology Inspector. She has over 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and over 50 presentations at Conferences. Dr. Pieretti has taught extensively during her academic appointments and tutored several undergraduate and graduate students. She is currently involved in teaching and training for the Medical Technology program partnered by Baycare and Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. Dr. Pieretti is a member of the Association for Molecular Pathology and the Association of Clinical Scientists. She is certified by the American Board of BioAnalysis as “High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD-ABB)” in the discipline of Molecular Diagnostics and holds a Florida Laboratory Director license. Webinar: Candida auris: PCR Screening for Infection Prevention Webinar Abstract: In an effort to contain the spread of multidrug resistant nosocomial infections with Candida auris (C. auris), the BayCare Laboratory and BayCare Infection Prevention departments developed a screening algorithm to identify patients colonized with C. auris. Specifically patients admitted from Long Term Care facilities and those known to be exposed to other C. auris positive patients are tested by PCR and fungal culture. Patients are kept in isolation until the results of the test are known. Validation of the PCR assay followed CAP recommendations and included accuracy, sensitivity and specificity studies.
