Why does northern Ontario have more provincial ridings than federal? While southern Ontario’s electoral map matches the federal boundaries, the map in the north is different when it comes to provincial elections. The story starts with the 1996 Fewer Politicians Act passed under Progressive Conservative premier Mike Harris. This reduced the number of seats in the Ontario legislature at Queen’s Park and made provincial riding boundaries match the province’s federal ones. But that changed – slightly – under Liberal premiers Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne. In TVO Nerds on Politics explainer video, journalist John Michael McGrath explains why the Liberals chose to make an exception for northern Ontario in terms of political representation, and how that led to the creation of the constituencies of Kiiwetinoong and Mushkegowuk-James Bay. McGrath also tackles these questions: Are Ontarians well served by having fewer provincial ridings than they used to? Would having more provincial – and federal – ridings lead to more independent-minded MPPs at Queen’s Park more and independent-minded MPs in Parliament? This crash course is a good primer for anyone interested in learning about Ontario politics, the 2022 Ontario provincial election and earlier elections, the province’s political history, electoral politics in northern Ontario, the Ontario provincial legislature in Toronto, and the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. 00:00 Intro 00:13 Why are Southern Ontario ridings the same as federal, but Northern ridings are different? 1:11 Increasing representation for Indigenous and Franco-Ontario voters 1:35 Do voters benefit from more or less provincial ridings? .
