Rijeka is an important transport, maritime, industrial and cultural center with an extremely complex political background. Part of this history has recently come back into the public's focus through the film "Fiume o Morte!", although this video series was conceived even before it. To help us on our journey through this complicated sequence of events, we have Tomislav Kvaternik, a history lover who has taken the time to share his wealth of knowledge with us. In today's, first episode, we look at the origins and differences between Rijeka and Trsat, from antiquity and the Roman Republic, through the Middle Ages and Petar Kružić, to the rule of the Habsburgs, the French and Hungarian influence, against the backdrop of the development of industry and the port that was so desirable to all surrounding countries. This episode is important for the context of later events that are probably better known to the wider audience, such as the occupation of Gabriele D'Annunzio or the period of World War II.
