Did I get lucky with this project that it didn’t tear from soaking? Perhaps! I am glad I took the plunge/ thought- honestly was nervous to soak it. Fabric becomes weaker when wet, antique silk can be prone to tearing and add to this the fact that it was beaded, I went into this knowing there is a chance it may tear or fall apart. The person who donated the dress ,veil/ gloves also shared a video with me of someone creating an outdoor “bath” to soak an antique dress. I felt that this idea coupled with my homemade pvc and athletic mesh frame could help my chances for success. I will definitely try this technique again in the future! From my experience, it can be difficult to get stains out if silk, and this dress was no exception. The stains improved, but did remain. Could I have fared better had I let baking soda or other attempts sit longer? Possibly. Could that have been too much for the fabric to handle? I think that is possible as well. I’m happy with the solution to bead over the stains on the silk crepe layer of the bodice. I’m happy too that the veil survived a gentle soak as well, as that isn’t always the case. I so appreciate the donations I receive, and I continue to learn new things as a result. Thank you for being here with me on these journeys! 😊#vintageclothescleaning #beforeandafter ##vintageweddingdresscleaning #roaringtwenties
