What Employers Sometimes Tell Injured Workers (And Why It’s a Problem)

After a workplace injury, most employers follow the proper workers’ compensation procedures. But sometimes injured workers hear things from supervisors or employers that should raise serious red flags. In this video, Colorado workers’ compensation attorney Britton Morrell speaks with Kaplan Morrell team member Tammy about some of the most common warning signs that an employer may not be handling a work injury correctly. We discuss four situations injured workers frequently report: • Being told not to report the injury because it could affect safety bonuses or contracts • Being told to go to your own doctor and bring the bill to the employer instead of filing a workers’ comp claim • Being told it’s “too late” to report the injury because more than four days have passed • Employers delaying the claim or failing to provide authorized medical providers These situations can create serious problems for injured workers if the claim later becomes disputed. For example, if a worker tells a doctor the injury happened somewhere other than work, it may later be used as evidence that the injury was not work-related.
