Taiwanese forces stage annual anti-landing drill at Hualien port

(30 Jan 2018) Taiwan's military staged its annual drill at Hualien port on Tuesday to showcase the armed forces' ability to defend the Taiwan Strait. The two-day operation involves all branches of the military, including fighter jets, helicopters and tanks. According to the Taiwanese Defence Ministry, the drills are performed to demonstrate preparedness in the face of a possible attack from mainland China. Earlier this month, China's aircraft carrier conducted a long-range training voyage in the South China Sea, a move that raised concerns among its neighbours. However, Taiwan's Defence Ministry spokesperson Chen Chung-ji said the movements of the carrier were being monitored and nothing "unusual" had been found. Taiwan and China, who have bristled over each other's military drills in the past, split amid civil war in 1949. China still claims the island as part of its own territory and Taiwan's military has kept up its defences against a possible Chinese invasion.
