Emong Johnson Otinga and Bukedea Jazz Band performing "Loican Mam Epasi". Emong Johnson Otinga is the most prolific, popular, and respected musician from the Iteso tribe in Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya. Otinga trains village children and incorporates them into Bukedea Jazz Band. Some of the band members go on to achieve solo success, improving their livelihood through the training and experience they received from Otinga. While mainstream and commercial success has eluded the musicians of Teso and focused primarily on musicians from the dominant tribe, the Baganda, the Iteso people have a rich and diverse musical and cultural heritage that radiates a powerful and uplifting message to those fortunate enough to be exposed to it. All Teso music contains messages and lessons about life. Historically, music was a powerful tool used to teach the youth about life and culture. Once a large and powerful tribe (the second-largest in Uganda), war ravaged the Iteso people in the late 80s and early 90s, leaving them destitute and vulnerable to subjugation of surrounding tribes. Despite this, the Iteso remain warm, intelligent, humble, happy and grateful. These videos only begin to tell their story. Emong Johnson Otinga is a primary school teacher in the Bukedea District of Uganda.
