When the excitement is watch related, what I do, is forget serial numbers, model names and pertinent historical facts. This is precisely what occurred when we spent a whirlwind weekend with the SUB 600T ‘pacific’ limited edition, that we released in conjunction with one of the most underrated and overlooked dive watch brands in the game, Doxa. When it came time to shoot a quick review, on a Monday evening, after a solid couple of days of beach time, of proper lockdown warrior wear, I was largely tongue-tied for the full six minutes. I still recommend you watch, because while I struggle with my words, there are some absolutely stunning visuals of a legitimately deep diving watch, in sexy brushed titanium, for you to enjoy. The part of this video that I do get perfectly right - and, in fact, the reason for my peaking energy - is just how privileged we felt at launch to see a watch of this significance, and in so few examples, bearing our name engraved into the caseback. The return of the Aubrey Freres era 600T, in titanium for Chrissake, with our name on all 200 of em? Pardon my French, but that’s just fucking wild. You will pick up my authentic shock at the reality, as it lies in my hands, and my slow absorption of the facts. Because, while many of the other titles in our space, particularly Revolution, The Rake and Hodinkee - but increasingly Monochrome and Fratello, too - are working with brands on new watch designs, this is super, super fresh to us. I was on a podcast with George Bamford yesterday evening, and he reminded me once again of this. “What’s so cool,” he starts saying, in the most GB way possible, extending the "cooooool" to at least that many ’o’s. “Is that Wei, and Ben and you are putting your money where your mouth is. You’re literally banking on a design being popular.” Every time this viewpoint is reiterated, I get a jolt of reality that is not altogether pleasant. And that’s because we really are. As a small business, with no outside investors, these forays into limited-edition watches are big business for us. And we sweat the small stuff to make the watches as close to perfect as absolutely possible. And what did perfect look like in a revived 600T? It was a fully brushed titanium case, to lean into its robust Elon Musk 4WD shaped case, with chamfers flared enough to be the wedge-shaped size of said 4WD. It looked like a new dial colour altogether - to tie back to us, and our fringing Pacific Ocean in Melbourne, Australia. It was an integrated rubber strap, to continue a trend that should never die, which is purpose-made bracelets, capable of continuing design language from the case, right around your wrist. It also looked like a popping colour scheme of orange, crisp white and that oceanic blue - just to leave no doubt that this watch will cheer you, as well as meet whatever demands are in store for the day. All in all, it was a humbling experience. To burn through so many prototypes in search of the just-right configuration of elements. To learn, categorically, and for all time, that watch design is very much like a game of Jenga, where you can start out with so many ideas, and slowly but surely remove as many as possible so that what stands has both design integrity, and simplicity. One of the last things to go was our logo from the dial. While we love a co-signed dial as much as the next person, we decided that it was a piece we could remove to let the simplicity and boldness of the Pacific blue be the hero with as few co-signatories crowding the stage as possible. To the 200 buyers that snapped this up, congratulations and thank you. Not only do we wish that you wear this watch in good health. We also wish that you live your best life, and act out your best adventures, with us, and our questing friends, Doxa, on your wrist.
