(27 Jul 1953) The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Rupert de la Bere, who figured prominently in the great River Pageant, went afloat at Greenwich. This was the starting point of the unique event and, all along London River - from Greenwich to Westminster - a big audience was strung out, ships were dressed and keen anticipation prevailed. At the Royal Festival Hall Pier, the Queen arrived with the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by Mr Lennox-Boyd, Minister of Transport, to take the salute as some two hundred craft went by in a three-mile long procession.
