The large Roman amphitheatre in Avenches, Switzerland, dates back to the 2nd century AD. It was built in two stages and, after the second phase of construction, could hold around 15,000 people. The arena in Avenches was used for animal and gladiator fights, staged hunts, acrobatic performances and even executions. The amphitheatre, which was excavated and restored between 1987 and 1994, is only the second largest in Switzerland after Windisch (Vindonissa), but it is definitely the best preserved. It is still used for concerts in the summer.
