The final movement of the Duché d'Aquitane Suite depicts the arch (and/or illusion) of progress and the optimism common to any new period of human history; in this case, the growth of Frankish political and military power in the centuries following the fall of Western Rome, which seemed to many to promise a return to the lost civilization of the Romans.(In fact, conventional history posits that this return wasn't achieved until the Renaissance and some might argue it has never been achieved, period). This piece was composed in MuseScore, which is becoming my favorite program for writing in. However, a study of the score reveals various formatting irregularities, and MuseScore bounces audio very hot (exported audio sometimes distorts even at low initial volumes). This piece had to be exported at -6 db under unity (per MuseScore's in-box mixer) to obtain an audio file with no clipping -- even though live playback within MuseScore itself never peaked higher than -4 or -5 db.
