Lawrence Catholic Academy is located in Lawrence, MA. With 90,000 residents, Lawrence is the most of color community in New England (88% people of color, 81% Hispanic), the fastest growing community in MA (10% growth in the last census), and one of the youngest (average age 32). With double the MA poverty rate (21%) and half of the state’s average per capita income ($20,858), two-thirds of Lawrence’s homes are headed by single parents. In the midst of Lawrence’s social realities, Lawrence Catholic Academy (LCA) is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit elementary school founded in 2010. LCA educates 450 children from Pre-Kindergarten (age three) through Grade 8. LCA’s students are 94% of color: 88% Hispanic, 6% Anglo, and 6% Asian, African American, or other. LCA offers a strong college preparatory program, a rigorous STEM curriculum, research-based standards, and best-practice teaching methods. The impact of LCA on its students’ lives is remarkable. One hundred percent of LCA’s eighth graders graduate to high school every year helping to close the academic achievement gap for the community. All children who live in Lawrence deserve to experience this kind of education. The majority of them do not. This means that Lawrence Catholic Academy offers an educational and personal development that is the finest available opportunity for children in Lawrence. Tom and Jean Yawkey valued the importance of education and understood its ability to change lives. Over many decades, the Yawkeys personally provided tuition support and academic opportunities to countless employees and children of their employees at the wildlife preserve that was their winter home in Georgetown, South Carolina. The Trustees of the #YawkeyFoundation are committed to providing educational opportunities for degree-aspiring individuals who are working to achieve their academic and career goals. The Foundation partners with nonprofits with missions dedicated to higher education access, persistence and success for children and young adults living in Greater Boston and Georgetown County, SC, with special focus on individuals from circumstances and communities that may lack resources and pathways to opportunities.
