Tying a Dungeon Variant Articulated Streamer Fishing Fly

The Dungeon – and all of the size variants from mini to micro – has become one of the most favored big articulated streamers among those who prefer to strip flies for big fish. The design, from the vise of Mr Galloup, was among the OGs in the first wave of big, articulated streamers to hit the market. In addition to colorful names, these flies pushed both the design and size of streamers available in the market. It is a brilliant fly that can be used for multiple species. As spring approaches, we day dream about stripping this fly through the shallows of a lake and have it ambushed by a very large pike….or even a small pike. Our goal with this video is to show a couple of concepts: • The wooly bugger is a good foundation from which to build articulated flies. Whether it is simply two buggers connected with a wire (e.g., the Double Mint) or something more gnarly, the wooly bugger is a great starting point. As a result, it makes sense to master the wooly bugger • Adding elements like a marabou wing or rubberlegs are great sources for variations • There are some elements and techniques of many articulated flies that could be “advanced” techniques. These techniques are worth mastering. In the meantime, it is also possible to use substitute materials. A good place to start this process is to think about the purpose of the original material or technique. In this case, the spun deer hair head and collar have a specific purpose. Not only does spun deer hair look great, it is also rather stiff. When stripped through the water, the spun deer hair head pushes water. This creates a disturbance. This also has an impact on how the water flows around the fly. Specifically, the water is pushed around the front of the fly and then meets back at the articulation…this helps the fly wiggle and swim. Beyond the purpose of the material and technique, it is also helpful to think if a technique can be broken into several simpler (hopefully) steps. In this case, the collar and head can each be tied as a distinct step with different materials So, here’s our take on a Dungeon variant with a few of these things in mind…. • Hooks: Streamer hook, sizes 4-6.
