Class 144 Pacer Number 144022 in WYPTE 3 car formation was built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) and Walter Alexander in 1987, 144022 is a distinguished member of the Class 144 "Pacer" fleet, purpose-built for the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (WYPTE). As one of the units expanded to meet rising commuter demand in the late 1980s, it is one of only ten members of the class to feature a three-car formation. This unit operates using a diesel-mechanical transmission, utilizing three Cummins LTA10-R six-cylinder, turbocharged horizontal diesel engines to deliver a combined power output of approximately 675 hp. It has a maximum service speed of 75 mph, a total locomotive weight of roughly 72 tonnes, and a total length of 46.3 meters. Featuring a DMS-MS-DMSL configuration, 144022 utilizes a rigid 1-1+1-1+1-1 four-wheeled non-bogie chassis, a hallmark of the railbus design intended to reduce maintenance costs on regional branch lines. The unit spent nearly its entire operational career based at Neville Hill (Leeds), serving as a high-capacity workhorse for the MetroTrain network across the Airedale and Caldervale lines. Originally wearing the iconic West Yorkshire "Red and Buttermilk" livery, it later transitioned into Northern Rail colors. Following its retirement in 2020, it moved to the Keith & Dufftown Railway in Moray, Scotland, where it now serves as a key part of their operational fleet, often running alongside the original Pacer prototype to showcase the full evolution of the class.
