This is more of a vlog-style video where I share my process so far. In shoemaking, having a last that fits the foot is essential, but it is often difficult to obtain. I have been exploring ways to create a custom last as simply as possible. This time, I tried making one using plaster. Please note that this video shows a work still in progress. Wood is a common and durable material for making lasts. But working with wood requires very sharp tools, and keeping them sharp takes skill and effort. Because of this, many people give up on making their own lasts. I’ve been exploring easier alternatives — ways to make lasts without needing razor-sharp tools. Plaster, while fragile, is much easier to carve and can be shaped with even modest tools. I’m also experimenting with shoemaking methods that work with these more delicate plaster lasts.
