These fish are one of my all-time favorites, and I hope this guide helps them gain more popularity in the aquarium hobby while ensuring you provide them with the best care possible. Honey Gourami Overview Honey Gouramis (Trichogaster chuna) are peaceful labyrinth fish native to the slow-moving waters of northeast India and Bangladesh. Their labyrinth organ allows them to breathe atmospheric air, similar to Betta and Paradise Fish. They grow to about 2.5 inches (6 cm), live up to six years, and thrive in smaller, planted tanks. Honey Gourami Tank Setup Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a pair. Plants: Include live or high-quality fake plants like Java Fern, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants for cover. Substrate: Dark substrates enhance their vibrant colors. Filtration: Use sponge filters or gentle hang-on-back filters to avoid strong currents. Jump Risk: Use a fitted lid or lower the water level slightly. Honey Gourami Water Parameters Temperature: 74-82°F (23-28°C). pH: 6.0-7.5. Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard. Honey Gouramis are resilient, adapting to various conditions, but always start with a fully cycled aquarium to avoid ammonia and nitrite spikes. Honey Gourami Diet These omnivores love a varied diet. Their staples include Fluval Bug Bites, bloodworms, daphnia, and cyclops. They’re shy feeders, often waiting for calmer moments to eat, so ensure they get their share in community setups. Honey Gourami Tank Mates Honey Gouramis are peaceful fish that coexist with small species like Neon Tetras, Chili Rasboras, Corydoras, and even shrimp like Cherry and Amano. They are plant-safe, making them excellent for community and planted tanks. Why Keep Honey Gouramis? Honey Gouramis are hardy, peaceful, and exhibit fascinating behavior, such as using their modified ventral fins to explore their surroundings. Their vibrant colors and gentle nature make them perfect for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
