In 2014, Katherine suddenly experienced facial drooping and was dismissed from the ER with steroids and suggested a neurologist appointment. Later, she discovered the Brain Aneurysm Foundation at a race in Riverside Park and realized the similarity in symptoms. She underwent testing, which revealed her own aneurysm. She had life-saving surgery in June 2015. Tragically, her cousin Monique, who also had severe headaches but was denied coverage because only one family member had a brain aneurysm, died from a rupture. Katherine emphasizes the need for awareness, funding, and advocates for reevaluating insurance policies to ensure access to essential testing and treatment.
