Monica Leonardo is a human rights attorney in Guatemala, specializing on the rule of law. She discusses the human rights violations transgender women face in Guatemala in a conversation with Klaus Mueller. The conversation took place during the fifth session of the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum on 'Home: Safety, Wellness, and Belonging' in May 2017. Leonardo explains how transgender women, in particular, are at risk of being pushed into sex work, leaving them vulnerable to further violence and HIV exposure. She also explains how simple administrative procedures recognizing their gender identity could advance their rights. "I have worked in the past with organizations of transgender women to adopt legislation that would recognize their gender identity and their autonomy. […] It would only require a simple administrative procedure for their sex and their names to be changed in official documents, as a means to have their gender identity recognized. This would allow them to apply for jobs, for pensions, for opening bank accounts, for renting apartment – and, in general, giving them a way to express themselves." The Salzburg Global LGBT Forum was formed in 2013 to establish a truly global space to reflect upon and advance the LGBT and Human Rights discussions around the world. Its signature is the international representation of leaders from diverse fields – including human rights, legal, artistic, and religious backgrounds. Founded and chaired by Dr. Klaus Mueller, the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum currently connects representatives from more than 70 countries (as of May 2017).
