Welcome to the beautiful city of Yaroslavl, one of the shining jewels of Russia’s Golden Ring. We traveled here to meet a friend who calls this historic city home. We spent a wonderful weekend with Sergei and his sister, Anastasia. Their kindness and generosity made our visit truly special—they showed us the best of Yaroslavl, and I could feel how much pride they have in their city. Patrick kept saying that Yaroslavl reminded him of Sydney—it felt like home to him. I didn’t quite share the same feeling, but nonetheless, the city had its own unique charm. I imagine places like the Tolga Monastery would be even more stunning in the summer, so we hope to return when the weather is warmer to fully appreciate Yaroslavl’s beauty. As always, I’ll list the places we visited below in case you’d like to explore them yourself or try out any of the restaurants and cafés we enjoyed. Now, about the train ride… Let’s just say I won’t be booking a third-class open sleeping compartment again. Lesson learnt! One thing that stood out to me, though, was how people naturally strike up conversations with strangers. To escape the cramped cabin, we spent some time in the train’s kitchen area. There were no available seats, but a woman kindly invited us to share hers. As we sat and made small talk, I noticed another group of strangers at the next table doing the same. It made me realise that this is probably a normal part of train travel in Russia—meeting and chatting with strangers. Sometimes, Russia feels wonderfully old-fashioned—not in a bad way, but in a nostalgic, heartwarming way. In some aspects, it’s incredibly advanced technologically, yet in moments like these, it feels like stepping back into the 1990s. I love that contrast.
