The Art of Physical Examination

The clinical (physical) examination of a patient is an art that is increasingly being neglected and underdeveloped. As the years go by, more young doctors tend to rely on laboratory and diagnostic tests prematurely, minimizing or skipping the physical examination of the patient. Often, time pressure is cited as a justification, which admittedly is frequently quite significant. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how much we can and should examine, even when seeing a patient under time constraints, such as in a clinic with other patients waiting or during a home visit where we’re rushing to the next appointment. Scanning different areas of the body with our eyes takes only seconds. In those seconds, we need to gather all possible information. During the same time, superficial and deep palpation can be performed. By applying these techniques and following a specific order by body area, we can—and MUST—conduct a satisfactorily complete clinical (physical) examination in minimal time.
